This week’s entry is…probably not safe for work…

Strange Conflict, 1972 ed, Dennis Wheatley
I’ve been trying to get my hands on some Wheatley for awhile, as he’s more or less the grand-daddy of the whole “occult detective/urban fantasy” genre. But his stuff is perpetually out of print and can be hard to find. And when you do find it, it tends to have, well…covers like this, which encapsulate everything there is to say about the 1970s, really.
Unsurprisingly, the cover is the least racist thing about this book.

I had one of those DEVIL RIDES OUT and something-or-other Wheatley two-fers in a nice hardback reprint from Crown books. I tried getting into, but gave up 20 pages in; just too dated with the stiff prose and the bits of racism that would pop up now and again.
