Yes, it is safe to say that I did find the ending somewhat anticlimactic.

I never realized it until now, but for some reason, that was one of the only times I didn’t get angry at the “and then they became beings of pure energy!” ending.
I probably shouldn’t rewatch it now. I’m much less forgiving, 15 years later.
When I recently tried to watch Robotech, I was surprised by how intrusive the narrator was, explaining the fates of the SDF-1 his deep old-time radio voice. They probably should have just done like movies and dubbed extra off-camera dialogue from Rick and Lisa or whoever instead of “as Captain Gloval hoped to turn on the engines in time, the Invid swooped in…”
