Superman: Miracle Monday, 1981, Elliot S. Maggin

I think I prefer my Superman heroic and fighting evil instead of wallowing in self-important angst.

I love this book. I love the Luthor/Superman battle of wits Maggin’s stories featured where you could tell it was just the two smartest guys on the planet one-upping each other. I love Superman saving the world when every nuke on the planet detonates at once, and I love the way Maggin describes Superman’s calculations of a million variables per nanosecond as he deals with a tidal wave or a giant disaster. And I definitely love the resolve Superman shows when he pledges to spend the rest of eternity constantly following an omnipotent demon around rescuing everyone rather than take the easy out of killing the demon’s host body.

It’s weird that five years after this John Byrne would write a story where Superman kills three Kryptonians because they were powerful mass murderers. Maggin was definitely writing about the Superman featured in All-Star Superman.

I think I need a copy of this book. And I’ve never said that about a Superman prose novel before.

  3. “It’s Superman” is really good.

I still have the copy of Maggin!’s “Last Son of Krypton” I got when I was four years old. Stained with red felt pen ink, falling to bits and poorly repaired. Total joy.
