Cold Fusion, 1996, Lance Parkin
A mostly clever book, slightly undone by its use of some of the more aggravating “New Adventures” era tropes. The idea of the Fifth Doctor trying to do what he thinks is right, only to end up being opposed by his own future incarnation, is probably my favorite concept for a multi-Doctor story yet. References to a parallel world Gallifrey where Time Lords use magic and “the Other” are less appealing.
This was apparently a hard book to come by, as well, as it’s the only book from the Virgin Publishing period I had to buy a used copy of.

Yeah, due to it being one of the last published before Virgin lost the license, plus it being one of the few MAs that NA-only-readers were interested in, meant that it never got additional printings that would’ve fulfilled the demand. Not as hard to find as Lungbarrow or Dying Days, but not easy either!
This is much, much harder to get in this part of the world than Lungbarrow or The Dyign Days. I meet a man once, who claimed he had once meet somebody who owned a copy, but that’s as close as I’ve ever got.
It’s a shame, because Parkin’s books are always rewarding. And I read his book that attempted to give the entire Who universe a coherent chronology until it fell to pieces.
I thought it was rather clever that the cover artist had both Peter and Sylv wearing the same hat. Nice subtle touch, there.
I think it’s much harder to find than Lungbarrow or The Dying Days, b/c they’ve both been reprinted as e-books on the BBC site, so they were much easier to find to just read – this one hasn’t as of yet. Mind you, it does make me wonder if the BBC could make the entire line available again as e-books – there are a ton of NAs and MAs I only read as library books that I’d love to read again…
Adric finally made the team!
