Warlock, 1994, Andrew Cartmel
Cartmel’s “War” trilogy always seemed more like they were only “incidentally” Doctor Who novels. If you stripped out the Who characters, you’d largely get pretty much the same books. They aren’t a bad set of novels in their own rights, and this book, about investigations into a drug that amplifies psychic abilities and awareness, is the best of the lot, but they’re much more about Cartmel’s characters than the TARDIS crew. This isn’t a trait unique to Cartmel’s work in the line, but it stands out strongly here.

Warlock is one of the few books to get me so worried about a character’s fate I skipped forward to check how that plot thread turned out.

Badly. Whoops, spoiler.
Same here… and now, all I can remember is the pets-at-the-vet scene. Even then, I knew I was being emotionally manipulated… and I still dislike the author to this day for it. But it did depress the hell out of me.
