Now that he’s headlining a book again, I noticed that the usual complaints that Superboy is wearing clothes, not a costume, have started showing up again.

I’ll admit, if you only ever read comic books, and don’t get much exposure to any other types of entertainment, this notion of a character wearing “clothes” can be pretty jarring. But, look at it this way…Superboy is wearing that outfit because he’s, well…he’s communicating something…

What, you think Clark and Ma Kent are keeping him fed and housed on the incomes of a widowed farmer and newspaper journalist?

I seriously just can’t wrap my head around the idea that a character wearing clothes is a bad idea. It’s not as if he has a new ensemble every issue like he’s Katy Keene or something, either. What he’s wearing conveys the idea that he’s Superboy very well, dagnabit.
I *LOVE* Grimbor. And Vartox. Mmmmm. Woof.
Yummy!
Ok, this is fairly geektastic of me to be annoyed by this, but, um, he IS wearing a costume. It really doesn’t matter that the costume is a specific t-shirt and pants costume. It’s a freakkin’ costume. It pretty much never changes, it’s, in my mind, fairly iconic, it’s very recognizable, and pretty much the super-boy equivalent of spider-man’s black costume. Not much difference there. A costume communicates a message and this certainly, as you very rightly point out, Dorian, is communicating a lot of different messages. What he wears is most definitely CODE. To quote Beula Lamont, “”Honey, we’re all born naked. Everything after that is just drag.”
I agree with Michael. If you wear the same t-shirt and pants combo all the time, it’s a costume. And in many cases, that sort of costume looks better than a spandex jumper. Every other costume the modern Superboy has worn has been hideous by comparison except the normal Superman suit that he wore late in the DnA Legion run, and even that looks kind of stupid on a teenage body. I’d actually rather see more of this rather than less, as I think the spandex look works less often than normal clothes with a distinctive badge or symbol would.
They must have a problem with Wonder Girl, Jakeem Thunder, Luke Cage, Pete Wisdom, and almost everyone from X-Factor, too.
Super heroes wearing jeans…what has the world come to?
