I don’t think I have a problem with “nerdifying” the Doctor either. I think maybe Moffat’s gonna keep to his plans for an older Doctor, as the first casting call was for, but use a younger actor. It’s the kind of juxtaposition that works well for the character.
For example, the youngest Doctor on record before this was Peter Davison, and his performance made me think of Hartnell’s most of all. An old man in a young man’s body.
I like it, mostly because it suits the actor. (He’s nerdlicious!) However, as much as I don’t particularly care about what the Doctor wears, it isn’t terribly original. I mean, really, 10′s been running around in Converses, a tie, and that overcoat for three seasons: this really isn’t all that much nerdier. Also, and this may just have to do with American pop culture coding, so probably not on the mind of the Brits making it: bow tie = Republican pundit dweeb. I’m not sure I want to think of George Will and Tucker Carlson whilst watching exciting adventures through space and time. I’m sure it won’t actually be a problem, though.
It’s an interestingly retro look for Smith – although those pics make him look a lot shorter than I think he must actually be – but it’s agreeably student teachery of him. Oddly enough, all three modern Doctors have had the lecturer look about them – Ecclestone was a PolSci Polytechnic type, Tennant the desperately cool Physics Don, and Smith…ha ha ha, he looks like a Postdoc!
I have a good feeling about this pair. I’ve only seen Smith in a couple of episodes of…something terribly middle-clarse…and he was brill.
I have to admit just this one picture makes me happy . . . based on the early press photos, Smith looked like he was trying too hard to be the vampire from Twilight, so I was fully prepared for the Hot Topic-ing of the Doctor. This . . . this is good.
I like it too. As I said somewhere else, it’s “Doctory,” but not too “Doctory.” It’s actually a fairly subtle costume. To echo others, that gives me even more hope for Moffat’s tenure.
People are seriously complaining about this? Seriously?
Just today I’ve seen complaints about:
The Doctor’s outfit
Alex Kingston returning
The companion’s name
The shade of blue used on the TARDIS
The lack of Rose
The color of the Doctor’s suspenders
The color of the companion’s sweater
How “emo” the companion’s outfit is
The St. John’s medallion on the TARDIS doors
The filming location
You lie. No one can be dumb enough to complain about that. We don’t even know what color the TARDIS is actually going to look like after post-production. To complain about the color as it appears in these paparazzi photos is to complain about nothing!
While I’m fantasizing here, I’m also going to wish for a Matt Smith/Sylvester McCoy multi-Doctor story, simply because they both rock the college professor look.
Isn’t this TARDIS supposed to be the same spec (color included) as the original prop from the ’60s? (I think I read that somewhere.)
Man, am I glad I made the decision to have almost nothing to do with online Doctor Who fandom. (I’ve read the Ian Levine forums a few times for a laugh, but that’s about it.)
Also, as far as I’m concerned, Rose and her frightening chompers can stay in their alternate universe with her handy-dandy Doctor blow-up doll forever.
This outfit reminds me of the 2nd Doctor. He had a bow tie too. I have to say my favorite part of switching Doctors is watching them pick out their new outfit.
The first run of the series had a different regeneration for each new Doctor. I am hoping they haven’t standardized the regeneration sequence.
It’s funny. The wife and I (who met at a Doctor Who fan club meeting 26 years ago) were talking about the new guy and his tailoring. “I like it,” said I. “At least he’s not running around wearing the (blank)ing question marks.”
“That’s what I always liked about him,” said Wife. “It’s identification and quirky branding.”

Amy Pond, eh?
When I first saw Smith being interviewed after getting the role, I was thinking he’d be awesome as a Thomas Dolby type of Doctor.
This image confirms it.
I’m not sold on the bow-tie yet. While an odd choice, I’m not sure it’s Doctor odd.
But I’m absolute rubbish at telling how well a costume will work from production stills. I’m hoping his personality absolutely sells it.
The bow tie holds it together. He looks like an old college professor, with odd choice in footwear- very Doctorish.
And the redhead, well, *sigh*.
They look *adorable*.
I want to bake them cookies and, like, listen to the Postal Service with them.

Like the looks of the new Companion, too.

David Tennant was my reason for watching. :(
the bow tie needs to die… it causes painful flashbacks to question mark sweaters and multicolor coats. The rest of it is fine.
Also he still seems to be missing eyebrows…

I dig it.

All Star Jimmy Olsen? Or Tucker Carlson (ugh oh god).
I wonder if he’ll have a pair of “smarty specs”
The lack of Rose? His shirt’s rose colored! Not everything need to be so damn obvious, Who fans.
“Emo”? That outfit is “emo”? Really?
Also, as far as I’m concerned, Rose and her frightening chompers can stay in their alternate universe with her handy-dandy Doctor blow-up doll forever.

I like, if only because he looks a little bit like Pee-Wee Herman’s long-lost cousin.
What? I’m not the only one who sees it, right?

“It made him look like a clown in a costume.”
“He’s supposed to be in a costume.”
Sigh.
