Try restricting your search <a href="http://groups.google.com/groups/search?safe=off&q=%22star+trek%22+canon&btnG=Search&as_mind=1&as_minm=1&as_miny=1985&as_maxd=1&as_maxm=1&as_maxy=1986&as_drrb=b&sitesearch=" rel="nofollow">to a single year</a> in that range and you'll see what I mean. I wonder what the bug is? Did the search you did return too many results, and rather than just telling you to narrow your search instead just return almost nothing? That's kind of useless... I'm not sure how you searched Usenet to only get 2-3 references up to 1991, but I just searched from 1981 to 1988 and got 30,600 hits for ["Star Trek" and "canon"], which matches my recollection of it being a common term at the time, and I was only a casual fan of the show (but knew some hardcore fans).
